Caring for your teeth and gums is a pretty simple process. It means dedicating just a few minutes every day to oral hygiene, and being aware of the foods you eat. This goal can easily be reached by anyone who wants a great smile!
To start, develop the habit of brushing and flossing. You should brush for 2 minutes, 2 times a day. It’s easy to remember–just remember “2×2” and you’ll have it down! Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, gentle pressure, and short, back-and-forth strokes. When flossing, use ADA approved single-filament dental floss. This prevents fraying. Use a slow, even sawing motion to prevent cutting gums. Floss every day! It doesn’t matter whether you brush first or floss first, as long as both get done.
Next, drink a lot of water. This helps keep your mouth clean by removing food particles and other debris, and it is excellent for your overall body health. Plain or fluoridated water is the best for oral health. It’s tempting to put a twist of citrus into your water, but prolonged exposure to acid can be damaging to your teeth. Try infusing it with other less acidic fruits, vegetables, and herbs.
Third, be aware of the foods you eat. If you choose to eat starchy, sticky, or sugary foods every once in awhile, be sure to brush and floss extra carefully that day. Saliva is your body’s first natural defense against cavities. To encourage saliva production, consider chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after eating.
Finally, be sure to visit your dentist about once every 6 months. If you are in the Shelbyville, Tennessee area and need an appointment, call Chamberland Dentistry today at 931-684-9167! Dr. Pam Chamberland will be happy to see you and help you maintain a healthy smile.
